Botox

Botox is a cosmetic injection that is approved by the FDA that aids in the treatment of moderate and severe forehead lines, frown lines, and crow’s feet. In order for patients to get the look they desire, Dr. Shawl places the Botox injections exactly where it is supposed to thus making an individual appear as if nothing has been done to his face. In the treatment of moderate and severe frown lines, Dr. Shawl uses Jeuvea-a cosmetic injection similar to Botox, which is approved by the FDA. Botox reduces muscle activity under an individual’s skin temporarily. Whenever an individual squints, raises his forehead, or frowns, muscles under the skin make the skin fold, create lines, wrinkles, and creases. Less collagen is produced as an individual grows older. Collagen is a protein that provides the skin with the strength and elasticity that enable a person to make facial expressions; thus, when enough collagen is not produced by the body, the skin is not able to bounce back, which results in permanent lines on the forehead.

During Botox, very small needles are used during injections, which cause minimal discomfort. People who are sensitive to pain should let Dr. Shawl know so that he adjusts treatments. Dr. Shawl provides Botox injections at his office, and the procedure usually takes about 30 minutes. Injections needed for wrinkle reduction depend on the areas to be treated, which include:

  • Crow’s joint; three injections are given on each side.
  • Forehead lines; this needs fives injections.
  • Frown lines; only three injections are given.

After the injections, an individual may experience some redness at the site he/she was injected but only last for a very short while. Results vary, but most patients begin to notice an improvement in their look between 2-3 days after Botox, and the new look lasts almost four months. Dr. Shawl recommends his patients return to his office as soon as wrinkles begin to reappear.
